Cleanings & prevention
Regular hygiene visits are the simplest way to keep dental work — and dental costs — to a minimum.
What a hygiene visit includes
A routine visit combines a professional cleaning with an exam by Dr. Schmidtke. We remove plaque and tartar, polish the teeth, and look carefully at the teeth, gums, and surrounding tissue.
- Cleaning and polishing above and below the gum line
- Exam of teeth, existing dental work, gums, and bite
- Dental x-rays when they are needed to see between or below the teeth
- A plain-language review of anything we find, and your options
How often should I come in?
Many patients do well with a cleaning every six months. If you have gum disease, a history of decay, or you have been away from the dentist for a while, we may suggest a different interval. We will explain why rather than simply booking you.
Prevention between visits
- Brush twice daily with a soft brush and fluoride toothpaste
- Clean between the teeth daily with floss or another interdental aid
- Mention new sensitivity, bleeding gums, or a changed bite when you call
- Bring children in early so dental visits feel ordinary to them
