Onlay restorations
An onlay is a custom-made restoration that rebuilds the chewing surface of a back tooth while keeping more natural tooth than a full crown would.
When an onlay makes sense
- The damaged area is too large for a straightforward filling
- One or more cusps of the tooth are worn, cracked, or undermined
- Enough healthy tooth remains that a full crown would remove more than necessary
- An older, failing restoration needs to be replaced with something stronger
What the visit involves
The tooth is numbed and the damaged material is removed. We shape the remaining tooth, take an impression or scan, and fit the finished onlay so it seats precisely and your bite feels natural. Depending on how the restoration is made, this may take one or two appointments — we will tell you which before we begin.
Afterward
An onlay is cared for like a natural tooth: normal brushing, cleaning between the teeth, and regular hygiene visits. Let us know if the bite feels high or if sensitivity lingers, and we will adjust it.
